What are the documents needed to obtain a driver’s licence? How much does it cost in 2022? Can you get your licence from any traffic department unit? What are the components of the driving exam? To get a driver’s licence:
- You must be 18 years old.
- You must have a valid national ID card.
- Visit your designated traffic department unit which is decided according to the address on your national ID card.
Proof of literacy. You must have any of the following:
- Proof of finishing elementary school (Ebteda2eya).
- Proof of literacy from the General Authority for the Education of Adults.
- Certificate of graduation. If it is already stated on your national ID card then there is no need for a hard copy.

You need to provide the following items:
- National ID card plus two copies.
- Four personal ID pictures. These are needed for the file and will not be on the driver’s licence.
- Original certificate of graduation if it is not already stated on the national ID card.
The medical examination:
- Once you provide the previously mentioned documents and open a file at the traffic department unit the next step is the medical examination both internal and ophthalmology.
- This is a recent service provided at the traffic department unit as before these tests had to be done at private clinics and the proof presented at the Traffic Unit along with the previously mentioned paperwork.

The practical driving test:
- This is the most important step of all, passing the practical driving test.
- The driving test includes driving between traffic cones without bumping into any of them. Each traffic department unit places the cones in a different formation.

Final step: receive your licence
If you pass the test and have all the required documents then the next step is to receive your licence the same day. Your picture is taken at the designated office and placed on the driver's licence.

Driver licence fees are 1800 EGP (this differs from one traffic department unit to the other).
