With the increase of YouTube’s popularity as well as the emergence of new video sharing platforms such as TikTok and Instagram both of which managed to attract a considerable number of YouTube patrons through reels -one minute long videos- YouTube was losing viewers. Would YouTube just watch as they lost subscribers? Of course not! Which is why YouTube created their own version of reels under the name “YouTube shorts”.
YouTube shorts were very well received by the public and viewership reached millions in a very short time which is when YouTube decided to implement new monetization guidelines for the YouTube shorts.
On September 20th 2022 Arabic YouTube creators’ channel announced a set of new guidelines for monetization that will be implemented in 2023.
Content creators will now be able to make profit on YouTube through different means.
The guidelines state that the channel creator must have 4000 watch hours and at least 1000 subscribers before they can activate monetization.
Another option available starting 2023 will enable content creators to make a profit if their channel has 1000 subscribers and 10 million YouTube short views in the 90 days preceding their application.
New features such as Super Thanks, Super Chat, and Super Stickers as well as paid memberships which are applicable to videos, shorts, and live streaming, will enable creators to receive monetary support from their fans.
YouTube will require both creators and subscribers to read and agree to the new terms and conditions when the new year starts.
YouTube has also decided to include ads during shorts. Last year YouTube also launched their YouTube shorts fund which gave rewards to content creators starting from $100 and up to $10,000 per month depending on how many views they receive. The YouTube shorts fund will end in 2023 and fixed revenue from short ads will be calculated instead.

YouTube shorts creators will keep 45% of the advertisement profit while AdSense will keep 55% of the profit. This will apply to shorts whether they include music or not. On the other hand, regular YouTube videos profit will remain the same with 55% of the profit to the content creator and 45% for YouTube.
Super thanks will be activated on shorts. This feature enables viewers to click a button and donate to show their appreciation to the channel creators. It also allows the creator to interact with their top fans.
Creator music will allow content creators to utilize YouTube’s vast music library for their videos. Creators will also be able to keep the profit from advertisements and pay YouTube for the music in advance if they wish.
For some songs or tracks the creator will share the profit with the artist.
In conclusion the old guidelines still apply so if you haven’t started your own YouTube channel yet what are you waiting for?
