Sometimes, it seems like every time you go out, you end breaking the bank. However, there are several activities around Cairo that won’t cost you a lot of money.
Every Sunday, there is a showing of an independent film at the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Zamalek. The film is usually either Egyptian or European, and at times they interview a crew member after the showing, which makes for a nice discussion. This activity is free.
If you are in a more touristic mood, you should go for a walk down El Moez Street in old Cairo. You can spend the day browsing shops and sites as well. If you wish to eat, you should definitely pay a visit to one of the sujuk sandwich shops outside Bab El Fotouh. However, you have to pay for the sandwich.
Usually, when an artist holds an exhibition at a private gallery, they want as many people as possible to see their pieces. This is why these art exhibitions are free. So, it’s a nice idea to visit a gallery and widen your artistic knowledge. If you go on opening night, you can probably talk to the artist and ask them any question you would like.

If you are an outdoorsy type, you should consider paying a visit to Wadi Degla Protectorate in Maadi. It’s on the peripheries of Maadi, so it’s best to take a car. The protectorate is the best location in Cairo for hiking. It has several trails, and sometimes you can see some wildlife like a cute fox. All you need to pay is the entrance ticket, which costs EGP 3 for Egyptians.
Darb 1718 is a cultural center that holds many artistic events that are free such as art exhibitions, film showings, lectures, etc. The center is also close to Cairo’s religious complex, where you can visit several churches and mosques.
